Best Books

We've read a lot of books. In case you don't want to scroll through years of posts, here are some highlights.

TOP 10

I'm compiling this list mostly from memory of what the entire group seemed to agree on. There is no particular order, we just loved these books! (last updated 2017)

  • The Rent Collector
  • These Is My Words
  • Orphan Train
  • The Language of Flowers
  • The Help
  • The Invention of Wings
  • The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio
  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
  • The Hiding Place
  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

TOP 5 CLASSICS

I didn't think we should let these count with the other list because many of us have a special place in our hearts for the classics.
  • Jane Eyre
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Anne of Green Gables
  • Gone with the Wind
  • The Scarlet Pimpernel

CATEGORIES
  • Most Discussed:
    • Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother: Most of us in book club are mothers and this book comes up again and again in our book club meetings (even though we read it all the way back in May 2012). In fact, our new members often read this book just so they can relate to all the times we reference it.
    • The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: If it doesn't spark joy it has to go. Don't worry Ms. Kondo, we got a lot of joy from the proper way to fold socks (and now we know how the socks feel about it).
  • Most Hot and Cold:
    • East of Eden: Some loved it (like, "this is my favorite book ever," loved it) and some hated it (like, "I didn't even finish it," hated it).
    • Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal: "This is a book?" asked some readers with annoyance. Others enjoyed the author's unique musings on life and the interactive elements. Did you text while reading?
  • Best Nonfiction:
    • Outliers: 10,000 hours. That's all you need to be amazing at anything.
    • BOMB
