Summer Reading

Book club is taking a break for the summer. I hope you have some great summer reads planned. Here are a few suggestions:

The Family Romonav by Candace Fleming is a YA nonfiction book about the Russian Tsar's family. I have always been intrigued by the story of Anastasia. I remember watching the old movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Yul Brynner and wondering what was true and what was fiction. This book is engaging and helps make sense of all the political turmoil happening in Russia around WWI. We get a more personal look at the family and it does, in the end, answer the question of the famous lost duchess.

I recently started a new series that is a fun, light read perfect for the beach. Jane Austen Takes the South by Mary Jane Hathaway are modern stories, with all new characters,  wrapped around the plots of our beloved Austen. The books include quotes from Austen's original works at the chapter beginnings. And yes, the recipes are included.

Elise's suggestions:

Edenbrooke  and Blackmoore, both by Julianne Donaldson, are regency period romances.

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown is a wonderful story about an unlikely University of Washington rowing team that won the 1936 Olympics hosted by Hitler.

For those of you who didn't get a chance to read These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner with us in book club years ago, it is a wonderful summer read about a pioneer girl and was based on the author's grandmother. There are also two more books in the series. (It is on our best books list!)
